| ABOUT JAPANESE SHOJI DOORS | |
|
Traditional Japanese style shoji doors are typically constructed of cedar wood known as sugi. The single-sided grid work pattern faces toward the inside of the home, and rice paper derived from the mulberry plant which is adhered to the outer side with rice glue. Shoji doors slide on top and bottom wooden tracks, and each door is custom-made for each home. Shoji doors constructed in the west usually differ from traditional Japanese shoji doors in two important ways. First, western shoji doors usually have grid work patterns on both sides, and second, western shoji doors usually use a man-made material such acrylic rice paper or a laminated glass. These two differences offer advantages over traditional Japanese construction. The double-sided grid work adds integrity and strength, and acrylic rice paper is more durable and does not yellow or fade over time. EW Gallery's shoji doors are custom-made to your exact specifications. We offer a number of common and exotic woods. Choose from one of our standard grid patterns, or create your own. Select from our wide range of acrylic rice paper patterns and colors. We suggest using upper and lower tracks whenever possible, but almost 90% of our installations utilize only a top track because of existing flooring. You can also accent your shoji doors or the rest of your home with the various raw materials we offer. |
